Spousal Benefits for Divorced Women
Questions about spousal benefits sit on top of the list of most frequently asked questions fielded by The AMAC Foundation’s Social Security Advisory Service. And questions about benefits available to divorced spouses, primarily from women, constitute a fair percentage of the spouse questions received. Many are surprised to find that a divorced spouse is, with only a couple of exceptions, entitled to the same benefits as a current spouse, the main criteria being a) the claiming spouse is not currently married and b) the marriage lasted at least 10 years.
