About Submitting Documents to Social Security While Offices Are Closed
Like most Government agencies, the Social Security Administration (SSA) closed all field offices to public access because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has fundamentally change the way that Americans interact with the SSA. This change is especially troubling because to process certain claims, Social Security requires original documents such as a passport, a drivers license, a citizenship certificate and the like. But sending those important document off in the US Mail, to a government agency working under pandemic restrictions, is worrisome for most. Due to concerns about the documents being lost or misplaced, to say nothing of the need to have certain documents on your person daily, several Congressional Representatives have implored the SSA to seek alternate ways that the SSA can validate identity using such documentation. This article, although specific to Central NY State, has national implications because all SS beneficiaries loathe sending important documents to SS via the US Mail.
