A Negative View on Calls for Social Security Expansion

Veronique de Rugy (George Gibbs Chair in Political Economy and a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University), in a post today on ocregister.com, takes a precautionary view on calls surfacing for Social Security expansion in the wake of the recent Trustees Report. As many are aware, the 2022 Trustees Report suggests an additional year before the trust fund reserves run dry, and many sources have interpreted this as a signal to expand benefits. Ms. De Rugy takes a much different position on what the one-year reprieve means, summing it with this statement “When it comes to Social Security, there are few reasons to bring out the bubbly, and even fewer reasons to increase benefits.” Read her thoughtful post here…
