Another View of “Average” Social Security Benefits

Most articles on the distribution of Social Security benefits portray the average monthly benefit amount paid to all recipients, but here’s another view on the average. In April of this year, SSA reports that the average monthly benefit payment paid to a retired worker was $1,666.49, but that can be misleading for someone contemplating filing at age 62. In fact, a post today on GoBankingRates.com notes that “according to the SSA’s 2021 Annual Statistical Supplement, the monthly benefit amount for retired workers claiming benefits at age 62 earning the average wage was $1,480 per month for the worker alone. The benefit amount for workers with spouses claiming benefits was $2,170 at age 62.” Knowing this particular average is important to someone grappling with the decision to file early.
