Knowing when to apply for Social Security so your payments start when you want is an important part of your decision making process, but knowing how to apply is also important. You can apply for benefits up to four months before you wish your payments to start, but you shouldn’t wait any longer that two months prior to submit your application. Otherwise, your payments probably won’t start in the month you want them to because it takes Social Security a fair amount of time to process your application. As for how to apply, you have several options, including applying online (by far the most efficient way) or calling Social Security for an appointment to apply over the phone (or in person at your local office).
