The Importance of Social Security Numbers in Preventing Identity Theft

You may have wondered why we frequently post articles on this site dealing with the scams and fraud activities preying on Americans in general but seniors in particular. That’s because this is a pervasive issue, with new scam opportunities popping up continuously. And at the center of most of these nefarious plots is the Social Security number, a topic that was explored in last week’s House Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee hearing on Social Security number (SSN)-related to identity theft.

As a follow-up to that hearing, today the Social Security Office of the Inspector General provides additional detail on the subject in a post titled, “The Social Security Number: The Lynchpin to Identity Theft.” In the post, Jeffrey Brown, Deputy Assistant Inspector General elaborates on this piece of data becoming the cornerstone of the identity framework and provides detail on SSA’s efforts to curb identity theft.
