The Importance of Adequate SSA Funding to Fight Identity Theft
Follow-up commentary from last week’s Ways and Means Social Security Subcommittee hearing on Social Security number (SSN)-related identity theft continues to show up in media outlets. Here are remarks from the testimony of Retired IAM General Secretary-Treasurer and current Alliance for Retired Americans President Robert Roach Jr., asserting that “If the Social Security Administration, which is already short staffed, was forced to cut its budget, the agency’s work to protect Americans from Social Security number identity theft and other fraud would be hampered.” His remarks focus on the need for SSA to be able to strengthen its ability to combat identity fraud, a problem that affects millions of vulnerable seniors year in and year out.
