Debate: what should the retirement age be?
Lori Konish notes that more Americans are expected to turn 65 through 2027 than in any time in history. Despite the ‘silver tsunami,’ the correct age to retire is still in question. While age 65 is often thought of as the correct age because of Medicare eligibility, one can collect Social Security at age 62 (albeit reduced benefits) or full benefits at ge 67 (for those born 1960 or later). Konish also notes the particular plight of airline pilots who legally must retire (or at least quit flying). Congress is considering rasing that age and is facing pressure on both sides of the issue.
