SSA Making Improvements in Disability Wait Times

The Social Security Administration’s new SecurityStat program, described as a pathway to improve service by the Agency, is evidently producing decreases in wait time in various areas, including the processing of Disability Insurance (SSDI) appeals. SSA.gov reports, for example, that the average Disability appeals processing time dropped from 458 days in September of 2023 to to 347 days in April of 2024.

According to SSA.gov, More than 70 million people depend on Social Security benefits, and millions more reach out each year for other services like requesting a new Social Security card. At the same time, we’re experiencing an increasing number of customers, less operating funds per customer, and fewer employees. We’re working to provide our customers with the service they expect.

The SecurityStat program is an initiative of Commissioner Martin O’Malley, intended to improve the agency’s operations and transparency. Learn more about this initiative here.
