Retirees in the Chicago area are contacting an NBC affiliate questioning the origin of “unexpected” deposits in the $6000 range appearing in their bank accounts. Some have indicated they do not know why they’ve received the payments, so NBC 5 reporter Leigh Lesniak has produced an explanation shared on their website yesterday. The payment is “legit,” the post explains, clarifying that the deposits are associated with the recent implementation of the Social Security Fairness Act signed into law in January. The post describes the Act’s intent, noting that an estimated 3 million people will receive an average payment of $6710 as the retroactive portion of the ruling is processed.
