Handling Social Security Overpayment repayments - MSN

Effective March 10, 2025 Social Security reinstated its policy of withholding 100% of payments to pay off overpayments. The new rule applies after March 27th. If you have been overpaid, Social Security will send you a letter with an explanation and information on how you can repay it.

If you believe you have not been overpaid, appeal by filling out Form SSA-561, Request for Reconsideration. If you agree that you have been overpaid but you are unable to repay it because you did not cause it or you cannot afford it file form SSA-632 Request for Waiver of Overpayment Recovery.
