About Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Insurance Coverage)
“Medicare Part D” refers to insurance for prescription drugs, usually available when you are also enrolled in Medicare Part A (inpatient hospitalization coverage) and Medicare Part B (coverage for outpatient healthcare services). Except for limited drug coverage provided by Part A when hospitalized, regular Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage.
Many “Medicare Advantage” plans (private insurance which replaces original Medicare Part A and Part B) include prescription drug coverage, but “Medicare Supplement” (“Medigap”) plans do not, which is why many choose to buy a separate Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. However, it is very important to understand when you should seek a Part D plan, because such plans can only be acquired without penalty during certain specified “enrollment periods.” And, all of this is explained in this HealthLine article.
