Government Shutdown? Medicare and Social Security Benefits to Continue Uninterrupted - Medicare Rights Center
With much partisan rhetoric, Washington, D.C. Democrats and Republicans seem to be headed for an impasse when it comes to keeping government daily operations funded after September 30th. Both sides seem to be locked into their respective legislative priorities, with no compromise in sight. And that likely makes many American seniors nervous about whether their Medicare and Social Security benefits will continue! But, as this article by Lindsey Copeland at the Medicare Rights Center explains, both Medicare and Social Security benefits are not dependent on the federal government’s regular operating budget. Rather, since neither Medicare nor Social Security funding are dependent on the legislation set to expire, both will likely be only very minimally affected if the Federal Government does, indeed, shut down, and that affect will not include benefit payments. Since 2010, Congress has been sitting on its hands and doing nothing. Angry Bear Blog has been writing on the Social Security short since then. Dale Coberly, Bruce Webb and Dan Crawford have been touting a simple program of 1 tenth of 1% increases for 10 years for both citizen and employer until 2,7% was reached. It would have made the program more solvent than what it is today and into the future. Here we are still writing about different ways to “begin” to improve solvency of the program.
One Congressional representative on the west coast (Oregon or?) did agree with us. But as is so typical, Congress is very slow to act.
The longer once waits, the more the increase in needs over years. Even so, a one tenth of 1% going forward would begin to fill S.S. coffers.
