Retrospective on “WEP/GPO” - UNIONRAYO

This article on the elimination of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) provides a union-perspective of those two Social Security (SS)provisions and how their recent elimination affects nearly 3.1 million public servants. Essentially, the provisions affected (reduced) SS retirement benefits as well as SS spousal & surviving spouse benefits for decades. Many of those affected (and the unions which represented them) felt the provisions unfairly punished retirees for their public service. While there are opposing opinions on the topic, the Social Security Fairness Act repealed both, opening the door to about $14 billion, including retroactive benefits, being paid to affected retirees.
