Are you earning enough work credits to qualify for Social Security? - MSN.com

You must work for at least 10 years to earn the 40 credits you need to qualify for Social Security benefits. Each year, the amount you need to earn tends to increase. It is driven by the national average wage index, the same as the cost-of-living-adjustment (COLA), and increases automatically.

The amount in 2026 is increasing to $1,890 per quarter, for a total of $7,560 for all four quarters, up from $1,810 per quarter for a total of $7,240 in 2025. This is particularly important for someone only working part-time to make sure they earn enough to earn all their credits for the year. You can earn all four credits in as little as one month if your income is high enough. Andrea Alett Nabour Herrera wrote an article about earning the necessary work credits.
