Thanksgiving Greeting from the AMAC Foundation Staff

The staff here at the AMAC Foundation wishes you a happy, healthy, and peaceful Thanksgiving Holiday! We are thankful for the opportunity to serve as a trusted resource for America’s seniors, offering meaningful education on the most pressing issues in the public sphere and assisting the public in navigating the whitewaters of Social Security, Medicare, and the myriad retirement questions they face.

And, in the spirit of always delivering valuable information, we’re including a quick historical recap of how this great day became part of our American heritage.

Although recognition of a “Thanksgiving Day” in America dates back to 1621, or even back to 1565 say some historians, it really wasn’t established as a fixed national holiday until President Abraham Lincoln made it so in 1863. At the suggestion of 74-year-old activist, writer, and magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale, President Lincoln recognized what had become an annual event and adopted as a “National and fixed Union Festival.” Her impassioned plea to President Lincoln included this call to action, “You may have observed that, for some years past, there has been an increasing interest felt in our land to have the Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the States; it now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution.”

It appears that Lincoln was moved by Ms. Hale’s remarks, and on October 3, 1863 he issued these remarks:

“In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved… The year that is drawing towards its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies… No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Highest God…

It has seemed to me fit and proper that these gifts should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people; I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and a Prayer to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.”

Thus, observance of Thanksgiving was forever embedded in the country’s regular holiday calendar. Earlier presidents had proclaimed Thanksgiving holidays, but only Lincoln took the step of designating it for permanent recognition.

So, now you know.

  1. Happy Holidays ! Unfortunately there is no ACTION taken in the US Congress regarding the Social Security future payment , I live on $768 payment overseas because it is impossible to live In USA with this amount of money , like me are many retired people in US who are sick and can’t work anymore , Republicans and Democrats needs to solve the Social Security Insolvency problem , a cut of 20% will be bad , thank you for your efforts in helping and making understanding the gravity of this matter .

Thank you for the comment…and Happy Holidays to you, as well! We agree that the absence of congressional action on Social Security’s financial plight is unfortunate. AMAC is aggressively pursuing a clear plan to address the looming insolvency facing all Social Security beneficiaries and the projected across-the-board benefit cut that would occur if Congress fails to address the financial challenges ahead for this 90-year-old program. AMAC’s plan—the social Security Guarantee—is a balanced, 15-point plan to change several of the key benefit calculations in a way that would make the program financially secure for future generations. Our plan, which you can read in detail at amac.us/social-security-guarantee, phases in these changes while protecting current beneficiaries and ensures that Social Security’s progressive design is preserved. I welcome any questions you have about our plan.

Social Security’s financial problems are formidable, to be sure, but we are confident that progress is being made. For example, our team was recently invited to meet with newly appointed Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano to discuss this matter, and our AMAC Action team in Washington continually presses for congressional attention.

Thanks again for commenting, and please stay tuned to this website for future announcements of progress on this matter.
