Didn’t Get Your Social Security Payment? Now what? - Marca.com

There are various reasons you may not have received your Social Security payment when you expected it. The date is one of them. Payments go out based on the date of your birthday, or your spouse’s birthday if you are on spousal or survivor benefits. In most cases, it is not due to a Social Security Administration (SSA) system failure.

First, are you sure of your payment date?  Not everyone gets their payment on the same day. This is the most frequent reason. Retirement benefits are distributed based on the day of your birthday. Birthdays through the 10th of the month are received on the 1st Wednesday of the month. Then, those with birthdays on the 11th through the 20th receive their payment on the 3rd Wednesday, and finally, anyone with a birthday on the 21st through the end of the month receives their payment on the 4th Wednesday. If your payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, you will receive it the day before.

Another common cause is bank processing delays. Delays can occur if you recently changed your direct deposit information, as it could result in a temporary verification hold. Various circumstances can cause your payment to be delayed by the SSA. The SSA asks that you wait at least 24 hours before you contact them, as most delays are settled within 24 hours.  The first thing you should do is check your My Social Security account to see if there are any messages posted. If you haven’t received your payment within 48 hours, it is time to contact Social Security.

  1. I haven’t been receiving my correct payment amount for over a year from SSD they have been sending me about $400.00 less for over a year. I showed my original paper work and award letter and still no effort was made to correct their mistakes. I recently contacted an attorney and they finally said they would correct the issue. Still I have not had the funds sent to my account. This has caused me so much stress and anxiety that my weight and health have suffered GREATLY! I would like to know if I would be able to file a civil suit against the Alabama SS offices. I had no issues with my payments until I moved from Virginia to Alabama. It has been an ongoing struggle and nightmare trying to maintain housing, food, and funds to cover rental cost for a room. The SSA in Montgomery is the worst I have ever encountered out of the 3 States that I have lived. Any information you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your attention and time.

    • Ms. Hardnett:

We’re certainly sorry to learn of your situation and the distress it’s caused you. The AMAC Foundation, of course, is not affiliated with the Social Security Administration (SSA) and cannot intercede on your behalf, and we cannot provide any legal counseling on the matter. We suggest that you consider recontacting the Montgomery SSA office and insist on speaking with a management representative. Along with that, you might consider filing a complaint with your Congressional representatives in the Montgomery area (U.S. House of Representatives local district Rep. Shomari Figures and/or U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville or Sen. Katie Britt). Note that, because congressional district lines divide the city of Montgomery, a very small portion of the extreme northern or eastern outskirts may fall into the 3rd or 7th districts, represented by Rep. Mike Rogers or Rep. Terri Sewell, respectively.

Thank you for contacting us. We wish you well in addressing this situation.
