Are You Eligible for a Social Security Spousal Benefit? - The Motley Fool
Both current spouses and divorced spouses may be eligible for a spousal benefit. A spouse can receive a spousal benefit if their spouse is eligible for a Social Security benefit and already receiving it. You don’t even have to have ever worked! Being eligible for a spousal benefit does not include you having to be eligible for a Social Security benefit on your own work record.
You can receive a spousal benefit equal to 50% of your spouse’s benefit if you don’t claim any benefits until you reach your full retirement age (FRA). A current spouse must have been married for at least 1 year, and their spouse must be taking their own benefit. A divorced spouse must have been married for at least 10 years, and their ex-spouse does not have to be receiving their benefit, but must be at least 62 years old or receiving Social Security Disability (SSDI).
