Social Security Makes Things Easier for You - SSA.gov
Since the availability of being able to create a My Social Security Account online, you barely need to wait on hold to speak with someone at Social Security any longer. Having an online account gives you access to many services, especially since SS has recently added even more.
You still need to apply in person or over the phone for survivor benefits and benefits for your children, but you will be able to see the status of those applications in your account online.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has posted an assembled page on their website with links to creating a My Social Security Account online, applying for different benefits, and a link taking you to a page on which they have assembled links to take you to the rules and information on eligibility for the different types of Social Security benefits you or your family may be eligible for.
