Q & A

Can I file for widow’s benefits online?

Complete Question: My husband just passed away two weeks ago. I’m doing my best to keep myself together (physically and mentally) to handle his death. I’ve been so wrapped up in everything going on between the funeral preparations and dealing with depression, that I completely forgot about social security widow’s benefits until my son reminded me. I tried calling social security, but I sat on hold for a half hour and finally gave up. I just don’t have the emotional energy to deal with this. Can I just file online? If so, how do I do it?

Answer: Unfortunately, you cannot file for widow’s benefits (surviving spouse) online. This is one of the few things that you are not allowed to do online with the Social Security Administration (SSA). I completely understand this is a tough time and dealing with red tape and forms, not to mention sitting on hold, is probably the last thing you want to deal with. So here are some tips to help you deal with this situation:

1) The death needs to be reported to Social Security as soon as possible to stop his benefits so you do not have to pay them back. You can report it yourself to the SSA but in most cases, the funeral home will report the death. Just make sure they have the deceased’s Social Security number.

2) If you are eligible for benefits on your own record, think about your financial situation and what your needs are. You will probably be presented with a couple of options regarding when to start widow’s benefits. However, even if you decide to take the benefit later, do not wait too long to apply. The SSA has to process your application and they may ask for additional documentation. In addition, you should receive your lump sum benefit of $255 (the application for widow’s benefits is the same application for the lump sum payment).

3) Even though you cannot apply online, you CAN download and print the application form. You will still need to apply in person or over the phone, but if you download the application, you can be prepared to answer the questions on the 8-page form, and you can take your time collecting this information before you actually apply. The application for survivor’s benefits is called SSA-10: Application for Widow’s or Widower’s Insurance Benefits. You can access the form by clicking HERE.

4) If you have questions that only the SSA can answer, write them down as you think of them. That way you can be assured that everything will be taken care of in one sitting.

Good luck during this difficult time and do not hesitate to ask for help.
