Choosing When to Take Benefits

One of the most important decisions in Social Security and retirement is choosing when to start collecting your benefits. This decision could be the difference of living below or above the poverty line for many seniors. The longer you wait, up until 70 years old, the larger your monthly benefit will be. However, larger benefits are not the only thing to take in to account. Many have to file earlier and settle for lower benefits because they cannot afford to wait or are in such poor health that it does not make sense to wait longer.
