We have all seen those social media posts warning that Social Security benefits will cease to exist in 2035; they are false. What is true is that even if Congress does nothing about the insolvency issue, Social Security will still pay out benefits; however, it will be at a lower rate. The current Social Security Trustee report estimates the reduction in benefits will begin in 2036, and the reduction will be 17 percent. Mark Hulbert dispels the fear-mongering in the media.
