Good advice on investing; hyperbole about Social Security

Though the hyperbole is quite over the top using terms like “a future without Social Security” and “in case Social Security disappears” (not a reality), this US News & World Report article by contributor Maryalene LaPonsie nevertheless provides a great primer on investing for retirement. Similarly, the author’s dire comments about Social Security’s possible demise and her advice to blindly claim Social Security early doesn’t align with that of most advisors, who know that Social Security isn’t going away and believe that when to claim your benefit is a decision which should be driven by one’s specific personal circumstances and expected longevity. Nevertheless, if you put aside the implications that Social Security might disappear (can’t and won’t happen) and focus on the discussion of various retirement savings options like 401(k), IRAs, annuities and health savings accounts (HSAs), the article provides a good description of those options and how you might use them to secure a comfortable retirement.
