H.R. 82 in the News…Sponsor Launches Discharge Petition

Shreveport-Times reports that Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA-6) has initiated action to take H.R. 82 (The Social Security Fairness Act of 2023 bill he introduced in January of 2023) to a floor vote. The Bill has been held in the House Ways and Means Committee since its introduction; Graves’ move is intended to create the “… attention and debate it deserves before the end of the 118th Congress.” The motion needs 218 supporting signatures in order to trigger the vote, and Graves along with co-sponsor U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va are uusing the time between now and September 9 to drum up backing from Congressional colleagues.

On an intersting note, the Times article misnames one of the key rules addressed in the Bill, titling the Social Security Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) as the “Windfall Elimination Penalty.” Use of the term “penalty” unfortunately sheds a perjorative light on this part of the Social Security rulebook, although the debate that would surround a floor vote will likely deal with this matter when and if it occurs.
