Cyberattacks on companies that have databases containing your personal information, including your Social Security number, are becoming more and more common. A cyberattack on Kelly Benefits, a Maryland-based benefits and payroll company, has exposed the Social Security numbers of 553.660 Americans. This occurred between December 12 and 17, 2024, but was not fully disclosed until March 2025. The compromised information included full names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, tax ID numbers, medical and health insurance details, and financial account information. A person’s entire identity!
It is strongly recommended that you consider putting a security freeze on your credit report with all three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. It may prove a little inconvenient when applying for credit or a loan, but it will protect you from somebody else obtaining credit in your name and you becoming a victim of identity theft.
