AEI Weighs in on Future Demgraphic Problems for Social Security, Medicare
There were hints of it in the analyses of the most recent Social Security Trustees Report, with some sources suggesting that the projected fertility rate was overly optimistic. Although the Trustees did lower the projected fertility rate of 1.9 children per woman cited a year ago to 1.75 in their intermediate assumption for the future, and although they cited the impact of the continued decline in the ratio of workers to beneficiaries, some pundits suggest the demographics of a smaller future workforce could have a more dramatic impact on the future of programs like Social Security and Medicare.
