Low Gas Prices Endanger Social Security COLA

In mid- to late October, the Social Security Administration will announce its cost-of-living increase for benefits paid to eligible seniors for 2016. For the third time in seven years, the increase might be a big fat zero. The years 2010 and 2011 have been the only times seniors received no increase in their Social Security payments since 1975 when Social Security started indexing increases instead of having Congress determining the adjustments. If it happens again, the reason will be the same. Cheap gasoline.
