Resolving Social Security’s Financial Woes - The Hill
“No one is talking about eliminating Social Security or Medicare. We must, however, come to the table with serious solutions to ensure the federal government keeps its commitment to current and future beneficiaries. ” That is the admonition to Congress offered by Congressional Representative Adrian Smith in this opinion piece appearing at The Hill. The frustrating reality is that Congress has known about Social Security’s looming financial issues for decades via the annual report from the Trustees of the Social Security and Medicare programs and have, essentially, continued to “kick the can down the road” when it comes to needed Social Security reform. Such reform is not going to happen without bipartisan cooperation in Congress, something apparently elusive in today’s political environment. But the time to act is upon Congress – the Social Security Trust Funds will run dry in little more than a decade, resulting in an across the board cut in benefits for all recipients. Congress can – and must – work together in a bipartisan fashion to restore Social Security to solvency before benefits are cut.
AMAC has been at the forefront trying to strengthen Social Security by developing and proposing its Social Security Guarantee. AMAC has been discussing and continues to discuss this common-sense solution with Congressional Representatives in its efforts to protect America’s senior citizens who rely on Social Security.
