Social Security Administration as Independent Agency
On March 31, 1995, the Social Security Administration became an independent agency.
The original 1935 Social Security Act, signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935, created the three-member independent Social Security Board. This was an entirely new entity with no staff, no facilities, and no budget.
