Social Security and Illegal Immigrants…What’s the Real Story

Allegations of attempts to provide Social Security benefits for illegal immigrants have created a bit of a firestorm at times, as noted in a post today on Washington.com by Eric Ruark. In reality, it’s a bit of a misnomer since Social Security benefits are only available on the basis of a work record and a qualified history of payroll tax contributions. The confusion on this issue can be attributed to the fact that noncitizens can–and do–receive Supplemental Security Income benefits (SSI), a program operated by the Social Security Administration and funded separately from Social Security’s retirement and dependent benefit programs. Ruark explains the issue in considerable detail in his post which you can access here.
