Still Another Opposing Comment on the WEP-GPO Repeal Effort
Today’s headline article on the march toward a Senate vote on S. 597 (Social Security Fairness Act) presents viewpoints opposite from most of the supporting articles carried on the airwaves over the past several months. That’s to be expected since Social Security’s Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset are controversial and poorly understood by the general public. This lack of clarity is driven home again in a post by AEI Senior Fellow Andrew G. Biggs, using examples that illustrate the way these two Social Security program components work. As has been our objective since WEP-GPO repeal efforts gained momentum in the 118th Congress, citing this post and providing the information in today’s headline post is consistent with the AMAC Foundation’s mission of providing education on complex issues. There are two sides to many legislative problems; this is a classic example. We hope that understanding both sides will result in opponents and proponents making an informed decision.
