Survey Results: Citizens Can Face Hard Policy Choices, But Recommendations are Politically Problematics

After reviewing a wide range of options to prevent that event, including discussion of the potential downside of each proposal, 81 percent of Oklahomans endorsed cutting benefits for the top quarter of earners (those with average annual lifetime earnings of $65,500), 81 percent supported raising the full retirement age to 68, 90 percent supported raising the cap on income subject to the payroll tax, and 73 percent supported raising the payroll tax rate from 6.2 to 6.6 percent.
