Teachers, Retirement, and Social Security

According to the National Association of State Retirement Administrators, about 40 percent of public school teachers are not covered by Social Security. In those states where teachers and other state and local government workers are exempt from paying Social Security taxes, these workers typically rely on a state-run plan.
