The pandemic has impacted the makeup of the US labor market

New research finds the ranks of those planning to retire early are significantly higher during this economic crisis than in previous economic downturns.  This could have a huge impact on the US labor market since over the past 20 years the share of Americans working in their 70s has risen from less than 10 percent to nearly 15 percent according to the US census data.  The US Bureau of Labor Statistics had estimated that by 2024, roughly 25 percent of the US labor force would be 55 or older; however, the pandemic has already impacted the makeup of the US labor market.
