THE REGULARS: America’s working class continues falling behind

There is no question low wages are one of the primary reasons why America’s working class is falling further and further behind. Trying to raise a family and earn a living making $8 to $10 an hour is virtually impossible without some form of government assistance, usually in the form of food stamps or subsidized housing. In 1968, a full-time minimum-wage worker could support a family of three; today, a worker earning the minimum wage is lucky if he or she can support themselves. One indication the situation is bad is the fact Wal-Mart is voluntarily increasing pay for workers to at least $10 per hour, a strong indication of how antiquated the current $7.25-per-hour federal minimum wage is.
