When Will the Medicare Trust Fund Run Dry?

With all the activity in Washington these days focused on a new stimulus package, one thing that isn’t getting a lot of attention is the Medicare Trust Fund, known as the “HI” (Health Insurance) Fund. The HI trust fund, which pays for hospitalization services to Medicare beneficiaries, was slated (in the last Trustees’ Report) to run dry in 2026. Made even worse by the affects of the coronavirus pandemic, the HI Fund will almost certainly be depleted sooner. But one thing the experts agree on – they simply don’t yet know when that will be, but fear it could be as soon as 2022 or 2023. This Kaiser Health News Healthbent article by Julie Rovner explains.
