Most advice about preventing identity theft starts with safeguarding your all-important Social Security number. While there are times when you will be required to disclose your SSN, there are many other instances when you should think twice before doing so. You will have to provide the number to your employer and financial institutions, which will need them for tax-reporting purposes, as well as government agencies like the Internal Revenue Service and Medicare.
