Working in Retirement – A Growing Trend - Investopedia

Retirement dreams once consisted of lolling away the days in a hammock, sipping a cool beverage, without a care in the world and, I suppose, some dreams still hold that image. But the reality of retirement life today is frequently different, with a growing trend of working, at least to some degree, once one’s main career is over. The causes, of course, vary depending on the individual, but a recent survey revealed that the top four reasons for working after retiring are: need for more income; desire to stay active; to keep one’s brain alert; and because they simply enjoy what they do. All good reasons, leading to more than half of those approaching retirement intending to continue to work at least part time after “retiring” from their primary career. This interesting phenomenon is well described in this Investopedia article by Naomi Buchanan.
