How do I enroll in Medicare when working past 65?

Full Question: I’m 69, retiring from my job soon and never enrolled in Part B because I was working with great company benefits. I don’t want to make a mistake and am not sure what I need to do. Can you advise me of the steps I need to take to prepare for this life changing transition.

Answer: Before you leave your job and group health plan, I advise my clients to apply for Part B for your Medicare benefits to begin when you leave your job. On page 22 of the 2014 Medicare and You handbook it states that you will have 8 months to enroll in Medicare Part B without receiving a Part B penalty once your employment or health coverage ends.
