Social Security Tips for Same-Sex Couples

The Social Security Administration now recognizes and is able to pay out benefits to members of same-sex married couples. This policy change is a result of the June 2013 Supreme Court decision that section three of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. SSA announced in June 2014 that it would additionally process claims for retirement and survivor’s benefits for people in non-marital legal relationships. “These instructions also allow Social Security to begin processing many claims in states that do not recognize same-sex marriages or non-marital legal relationships,” the SSA says in a statement.
