Savings Accounts for People with Disabilities: Is Oregon Next?

Ross Ryan has a small but mighty list of things he’d like to someday achieve: He wants to own a home, he wants to study meteorology and he wants a car, so he can get around. But each of those goals requires money. And for Ryan, who’s disabled, that’s a problem. Though the Mount Angel resident works and earns regular pay, he’s not allowed to build a nest egg without risking the disability benefits he needs to live. Unless, that is, Oregon passes Senate Bill 777, which piggybacks on months-old federal legislation to create special savings accounts for people with disabilities.
