Healthcare Spending Compared to Social Security

Last year marked the first time that the U.S. government spent more on healthcare programs than on Social Security. This is mainly because of the new Medicare programs and changes pertaining to ACA. Total spending on healthcare in the previous year amounted to $936 billion compared to Social Security at $866 billion. Spending in this area is expected to increase by as much as 11% in 2016 and even more over the next decade. Medicare alone will experience an 8.8% growth from last year.
