Mothers Day Weekend: Lawmakers Urged to Assess Impacts on Women
Despite the gender neutrality of Social Security’s benefits, the American Academy of Actuaries asserts in an “Issues Brief” that the consequences of gender-related differences in America’s work culture can lead to differences in financial security for women in retirement. With employment history and life expectancy serving as primary drivers, the Academy’s brief concludes that “current Social Security law is gender neutral, and contains spousal and subsidized benefit provisions that mitigate, but do not eliminate, factors that produce lower benefits for women…” The Academy’s brief goes on to suggest that lawmakers consider future impacts on women when proposing changes to Social Security.
