Scammers don’t only target your Social Security benefits; they also target your Federal income tax refund. Once they have your personal information they can fairly easily file a fraudulent Federal income tax return to claim a refund and have it deposited in a fake bank account, which you won’t know about until well after you file your true return and the IRS notifies you that you filed a duplicate. The best way to prevent scammers from getting a refund which is actually yours is to file your Federal Income Tax return as early as possible.
