Improving the solvency and integrity of Social Security Disability Insurance program

At the annual cost of $146 billion, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program provides benefits to more than 10 million individuals. With the average wait times close to 600 days, SSDI fails to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, and it burdens workers with excessive costs. In the attached report prepared by The Heritage Foundation’s analysts, they estimate that an innovative transformation of the disability insurance program could reduce its costs by 54 percent in the long term. They also recommend Congress should implement 16 reforms to protect the program for individuals who have truly work-prohibiting disabilities. Click here to read their recommendations.
