Ex-spouses can get benefits, as well as current spouses.
If you’re divorced, did you know that you may be able to collect benefits on your ex-spouse? That’s true, even if your ex has remarried and has a current spouse who is collecting benefits from your ex’s record. There are, of course, some rules which determine eligibility for ex-spouse benefits, the most notable of which is that you must have been married for at least 10 years. But ex-spouse benefits may, indeed, be available to you if you meet the criteria. In this article by Jorgen Vik appearing in Charlotteville, VA’s The Daily Progress, the author explains how ex-spouse benefits work (an error in the article says you must be divorced for at least two years to collect benefits from an ex-spouse; that is only true if your ex is eligible for but not yet collecting Social Security benefits).
