Without Social Security benefits, about four in ten Americans aged 65 and older would have incomes below the poverty line, all else being equal, according to official estimates based on the 2019 Current Population Survey. Social Security benefits plays a major role in lifting more than 15 million elderly Americans out of poverty. Americans are eligible to start claiming benefits as soon as they turn 62 and as late as 70, but if your 62nd birthday is this year, 2021, there is one important change you should be aware of before you file for Social Security.  In Katie Brockman’s article for the Motley Fool, she explains if you are planning on claiming your benefits as soon as possible you need to know this one change.
