More Thoughts on Social Security COLA

The Motley Fool’s Maurie Backman, in a recent post on mooresvilletribune.com, takes a look at how the most recent cost of living adjustments enacted for Social Security recipients have lagged cost increase faced by seniors. Although some key healthcare cost components have held steady in recent years, she notes, other areas where seniors spend money have not fared so well. At the root of the problem, she suggests, is ” that the CPI-W doesn’t necessarily measure the expenses that eat into seniors’ income the most, like healthcare.” Her article references a potential change to a more senior-friendly index (CPI-E) to replace the current generalized CPI-W.
