Social Security When Someone Dies - Midland Daily News
Losing a loved one is certainly a stressful time, and among all of that stress is the question of what happens to the decedent’s Social Security benefit, and what is available to the survivors. In most cases, the funeral director who handles the death arrangements will notify Social Security of the death, which will stop monthly benefits. But, in any case, no benefits are payable for a deceased person for the month in which they die, so would need to be returned if received. There are also implications for a surviving spouse (or other dependent), as this Midland Daily News article by “Savvy Senior” Jim Miller explains.
