Social Security and Illegal Immigrants…What’s the Real Story
Allegations of attempts to provide Social Security benefits for illegal immigrants have created a bit of a firestorm at times, as noted in a post today on Washington.com by Eric Ruark. In reality, it’s a bit of a misnomer since Social Security benefits are only available on the basis of a work record and a qualified history of payroll tax contributions. The confusion on this issue can be attributed to the fact that noncitizens can–and do–receive Supplemental Security Income benefits (SSI), a program operated by the Social Security Administration and funded separately from Social Security’s retirement and dependent benefit programs.
